Helpful Hints

Vacuuming

Routine vacuuming with properly maintained, quality equipment is the single most important step you can take to extend the life and appearance of the carpet.

· Use a top-fill vacuum with brush agitation or a canister with a power head that has brush agitation.

· Soil should be collected in the vacuums recovery system to avoid re -entry into the air which can contribute to indoor air pollution.

· Make sure your vacuum has a high efficiency of HEPA filtering system or a bag should be used in your vacuum equipment.

Upholstery

· Read the labels and tags carefully and follow manufactures recommendations for care and maintenance

· Every time you have your upholstery cleaned, be sure to have fabric protection applied to extend its beauty and useful life

· Make sure you hire only industry-trained professionals who have experience with your type of upholstery.

Spills and Stains

Before treating a wet stain, blot the area with a whiter cloth or paper towels, dry stain, scoop up all the loose materials and vacuum any residual particles thoroughly.
Test your cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area of the carpet before using to determine if discoloration will result from their use.
Apply cleaning solution to the stain by dampening a white adsorbent cloth or paper towel and blotting the stain area. Under no circumstances apply cleaning agents directly to the carpet and never rub, scrub or use a brush on the area being cleaned. Work from the outside to the centre of a stain to prevent spread of the stain or formation of a ring. Always allow cleaned area to dry thoroughly. Groom the cleaned area by hand brushing or vacuuming to restore the pile's original appearance.

Centrepoint Cleaning uses unique methods of cleaning your carpet under the ACCI Standards (Australian Carpet Cleaning Institute of AS3733: 1995 Textile floor coverings: Cleaning maintenance of residential and commercial carpeting)

Water Extraction or otherwise know as Steam cleaning

Portable or truck mounted equipment that is used to spray heated detergent into the carpet pile at a high pressure and immediately extracted along with the suspended soil particles.
This machine may employ rotary brushes or another agitating device to work the solution into the pile and loosen soils.
There are many factors that affect the results of this method:

· Operation skill
· Solution temperature
· Spray pressure
· Vacuum power
· Pre-spray: spraying solution some time before extraction

Shampoo

In this method, detergent solution is released onto the carpet through openings in the rotary brush, the rotary action converts the solution into foam and works into the carpet.
Once dry, vacuuming removes the residue containing loose, encapsulated soil. At times chemicals may be added to the detergent solution to reduce odours, retard soiling, and brighten colours and/or speed drying.
This method works well in conjunction with Hot Water Extraction for cleaning highly soiled carpets, with heavy oil/soil build up.

Bonnet or Absorbent Pad Cleaning

This method is used when the solvent or detergent solution is sprayed onto the carpet followed by a rotary spin buffing with a bonnet pad.

Dealing with Professional Carpet Cleaners

It is very important to afford your cleaner all the respect due to a professional. Make sure you hire a reputed, experienced cleaner and follow his advice.
It can be very costly and time consuming should something go wrong.

Preparation:
· Remove/raise hangings, curtains, valuables, chandeliers etc.
· Vacuum the carpet- the carpet cleaner might not do it, or maybe not be as careful as you would

Communication:
· Specify special service like truck-mounted Hot Water Extraction treatment, if required, in advance
· Talk to the service person about cleaning methods to be used
· Specify the add-ons that you want or don't want
· Describe past cleanings, if any, that the carpet has undergone or any past experience that you have encountered
· Point out stains in the carpet and what might have caused them
· Alert the service person to any furniture with weal legs, seams in the carpet etc.
· Get the operation cost in writing before service begins

Afterwards:
· Pay only after inspecting the cleaned carpet or rug with the service person
· Make sure that the plastic or foil shields have been placed under all furniture legs
· Ask for estimate of carpet drying time and special instructions
· If the weather allows, open all doors and windows to speed up drying
· Do not cover the carpet with anything to walk on it
· Leave moisture shields under the furniture legs until the carpet dries completely
· Vacuum immediately after the carpet dries and regularly afterwards
· If you notice spots after the service person has left, call the firm immediately
· If the carpet still seems damp after 24 hours, call the carpet cleaning firm

If unable to resolve any disputes with the carpet cleaner:
·Complain to the local office of consumer affairs
· Contact the firms office or its franchises
·
Get the carpet inspected by an independent inspector who might even assist you in solving you claim
